It got really busy in the last week where we were here: We had to finish the Animal Paper, one history essay and one Intercultural Communication essay. Plus, we had to do a biology presentation. But besides the huge amount of works, I also experienced new things in and around Melbourne. I will cut it short for you:
Monday (01/28): We started into the week with a really long field trip. It was around midnight when we got back and then we had class on the next morning. But it was worth the experience. Since our biology professor planned this trip we also had to do a homework for it. A bus took us to Mount Donna Buang, where we walked in forests and a rainforest and had dinner at a pub. After the sun set, we went spotlighting! I have never done this before but it really was fun- scary but fun. With a flashlight we looked for gliders while walking through the dark forest and ended up seeing 8 gliders and one Koala sitting in the tree.
Tuesday (01/29): Everyone was a bit tired while we had class in the morning but when we went to the State Library, we all felt better. There, we learned about the famous bushranger Ned Kelly and afterwards, when we got back to the college, we saw the movie “Ned Kelly”. Not a lot happened that day.
Wednesday (01/30): Also on this day, we only had a history class and a workshop to work on the biology presentations. In the afternoon, I went shopping by myself, but I did not spend much money- not that day at least!
Thursday (01/31): After the last Intercultural Communication Class, we had to do the presentations. I was really happy, when it was over! And then, we watched another movie called “Looking for Alibrandi”. I might have to re-watch it, since I did not really get the point of it. It is a mandatory film in the high schools in Australia.
Friday (02/01): This was my favorite day of the week because we only had workshops that we could attend if we wanted to in order to write on our essay. But since I already finished one essay, I had a day off. Because of that, I went up the Eureka Skydeck, to get a 360° view from the 88th floor. Before doing this, I was not sure if the price ($19) would be worth it, but now I am so happy that I have done this. The tower is one of the best I have ever been to!! Then, later in the evening, I visited a student’s house, we did some pre-drinks and went out to a club. We had a great time until he decided to go home, which I did not! I stayed there (it was the first time I was completely alone in a club!) and met two really nice Melbournians. The only sad thing is that the club closed at 3am already. So we went to another club in the city. At 5am in the morning, we needed our beds, so we took an Uber back home. I hope, I will stay on contact with all the people I have met here!
Saturdays (02/02): On this day, a lovely friend of mine from Austria arrived in the city because we will spend my travel week together (still not telling what our plans are). Since it was a really nice and sunny day, we strolled through the city, saw the Hosier Lane, known for its Streetart, and went to Brighton Beach to see the famous Bathing Boxes and enjoy the weather. We met some really nice people along the way but we both agreed on going to bed early because she just arrived in the morning and I was out last night, so we were really tired.
Sunday (02/03): I showed my friend from Austria the Vertue coffee-place and she was amazed by it. The breakfast was once again delicious and it was a great start into the day. We spent the afternoon walking around the city, along the river and talked about everything that has been going on in our lives. I am really looking forward to spend more days with here before we will leave Australia behind and explore New Zealand.
Although I am really excited about the upcoming week, it breaks my heart to leave Melbourne! I know, I will come back but I simply do not want this time to be over already…
Hopefully, you will stay tuned for the second part of my adventure in New Zealand, which you will find under “Gap Year”- “New Zealand” in about two weeks.
